Goa online gambling: 2 Russians, 1 Ukrainian arrested

PANAJI: The Goa Police on Thursday detained two Russians, a Ukrainian, and two other people for online gambling. In Mandrem, a team from the Crime Branch lead by Inspector Nitin Halarnkar carried out a raid and apprehended the suspects.

Russian citizens Kirill Khadarin and Nikolei Balandin, Ukrainian Mykyta Atamanchuk, Delhi native Prabhat Pingreja, and Mumbai resident Rajiv Dosani were among those detained.

Nidhin Valsan, Superintendent of Police (Crime Branch), said that the suspects were exchanging money, gambling chips, coins, and other gambling-related items worth Rs 1,21,050 while engaging in a game of Texas Hold'em.

Through anonymous tips from the public, police in the Indian state recently cracked down on illegal gambling businesses. In response to an anonymous tip, the Goa police crime branch unexpectedly dropped by a rented business location in the area.

There, they found five people playing Texas Hold’em for money. However, they weren't only playing a casual game of poker for fun. They allegedly maintained an internet gambling website, which forensics specialists will now examine. Police made five arrests during the raid. One was from Mumbai, and the other was from Delhi. However, there were also one Ukrainian and two Russians.

On Tuesday, police  also searched a residence in the Calangute town and detained four people who were running an internet gambling website. In total, the cops confiscated USD 3,126 in the two raids.

It is said that 21 people running an illegal online gambling operation out of a rented apartment in Delhi's Janakpuri were detained by police during the raid.
