Panaji: A train derailed in south Goa on Friday (July 23, 2021) due to torrential rains and the overflowing Vashishti river (between Chiplun and Kamath in Maharashtra). The passenger train had landed from the railway track between Dudhsagar and Sonaulim after which the accident occurred and was buried underground (mud debris etc.).

The accident took place when the train was heading towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus from Mangalore Junction. However, the good thing was that no one was injured in the accident. A statement by the southwestern railway (SWR) said, "No one was injured or died in the incident. The train was later dragged to Kulem in south Goa. Not only that but another train Hazrat Nizamuddin-Vasco Digama Express was also stopped due to a landslide between Karanjol and Dudhsagar. The train was also brought back to Kasal Rock Station in Karnataka.''

Moreover, flood-like situations prevailed in many parts of Goa. One woman was killed and 1,000 houses were damaged in the incident. Hundreds of people were evacuated safely from the lower reaches. This flood is one of the devastating floods in the State in the last 40 years.
