To discuss the levying of a 28 percent GST, the Group of Ministers (GoM) on online gaming, casinos, and horse racing convened today. But no decision was made in the end.
Due to the absence of some members and information from the meeting, the GoM was unable to make a final decision. By the end of the month, the ministerial group is likely to convene once again. Before the 48th GST Council meeting, or before the second week of August, the group will submit the report.
The committee considered raising the GST on internet gaming, casinos, and horse racing by 10% to the highest slab of 28% at their meeting last month. However, it was decided to allow the GoM more time to submit its report at the 47th GST Council meeting held last month.
It was also determined that the tax would be assessed on the full face value or bet amount rather than the sum remaining after subtracting prize money. In the case of casinos, the tax should be applied to the admission fee paid while buying chips. Regarding horse racing, it was suggested to keep up the practise of charging a GST of 28%.
Conrad Sangma, the chief minister of Meghalaya, is in charge of the group of state finance ministers. The finance ministers from Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra as well as Telangana officials were present at the meeting.
