Google Messages has introduced a groundbreaking addition by integrating Ultra HDR (High Dynamic Range) image support into RCS (Rich Communication Services) chats. This significant upgrade aims to redefine the messaging experience, enabling users to seamlessly exchange high-quality images within RCS conversations.

The inclusion of Ultra HDR image support marks a notable leap in visual quality and is currently accessible on Android 14 devices. Devices like Google’s Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro stand as among the initial beneficiaries of this innovative feature. By incorporating HDR metadata into the standard JPEG format, non-HDR displays present images in their regular form, while HDR-enabled screens enrich colors and contrast, delivering a superior visual experience to users.

Although there are no specific labels identifying Ultra HDR images, users will automatically encounter enhanced image quality while viewing these images within Google Messages. The integration of HDR gain map enables HDR displays to enhance the image's colors and contrast. However, some additional metadata is stripped off when sending these images.

TheSpAndroid's APK teardown uncovered the code "bugle.support_ultra_hdr," revealing Google's efforts behind the scenes to integrate Ultra HDR support into its messaging platform. This addition, reportedly implemented in September, coincides with the release of the Pixel 8 series. Google's proactive approach demonstrates its dedication to maintaining a pioneering stance in the messaging technology arena.

While Google has not issued an official announcement, industry experts anticipate a gradual rollout of this feature to all Android 14 devices over the forthcoming weeks.

In a contrasting move, Google's prominent competitor, Apple, is gearing up for a significant shift by planning to introduce the RCS protocol to iPhone models in 2024. This move, working alongside iMessage, pledges to bring iMessage-style features to messaging interactions between iPhones and Android devices.
