New Delhi: In a recent development, Google has been dealt a significant blow as a federal jury in Waco, Texas, found the tech giant guilty of patent infringement against software developer Touch stream Technologies. The jury awarded Touch stream an astounding $338.7 million in damages after ruling that Google's popular Chromecast and other devices violated three of Touch stream’s patents related to streaming video technology.

The lawsuit was originally filed by Touch stream in 2017, alleging that Google had unlawfully copied its technology without proper authorization. According to Touch stream, Google's Chromecast device made use of the same streaming technology that was patented by their company, but Google strongly denied these allegations throughout the legal battle.

This is not the first time that Google has faced such allegations, as it has previously been embroiled in other patent infringement cases. In 2018, Google was ordered to pay $118 million to Oracle for infringing on Java APIs, and in 2020, it was hit with a staggering $731 million fine for infringing a patent belonging to Motorola Mobility related to smartphone technology.

The verdict against Google in the touch stream case serves as a major triumph for the software developer, which has devoted years to developing and securing patents for its innovative streaming technology. It also sends a clear message that even industry giants like Google are not immune to patent infringement lawsuits and must be held accountable for unauthorized use of others' technology.

In response to the jury's decision, Google has expressed its intention to appeal the verdict. The company contends that the patents in question are invalid and maintains its stance of not infringing on touch stream’s technology. Google has called the verdict a "miscarriage of justice" and vows to continue defending its rights in the court of law.

Despite Google's plan to appeal, the ruling could have significant repercussions for the company. Apart from being ordered to pay a substantial sum in damages, the verdict may lead to a more cautious approach in Google's innovation endeavours. Fear of facing further patent litigation could potentially deter the company from investing in new technologies or adopting certain features to avoid legal entanglements.

It also highlights the need for a robust and transparent patent system that fosters innovation while protecting the rights of inventors and creators. As technology continues to evolve rapidly, the battle over patents and intellectual property is likely to persist, and companies will have to navigate these legal complexities responsibly
