New Delhi:- Alphabet-owned Google is delaying the release of a fully custom chip for Pixel phones until 2025, The Information reported Thursday, citing two people familiar with the matter.

Google originally planned to release the chip, internally dubbed "Redondo," next year to replace a semi-custom chip currently in development at Samsung Electronics, according to the report.

The tech giant will also switch production of a chip called Tensor from Samsung to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC), according to the Information.

The world's largest contract chipmaker, the company's customers include companies such as Apple and Nvidia.

Google did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment, but TSMC declined to comment. According to The Information, Google plans to work with Samsung for another year and wait until 2025 to introduce a fully custom chip internally codenamed "Laguna."

The Laguna chip will be based on TSMC's 3-nanometer manufacturing process, which is currently the world's most advanced chip-making process, the report added.

Google's in-house Tensor G2 SoC powers his new Pixel 7a and Pixel Fold smartphones, which were officially unveiled at the company's I/O event in May. The Tensor G2 SoC is also in his Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro models from last year. The upcoming Pixel 8 series smartphones are expected to feature Google's next-generation chipset, the Tensor G3, codenamed "Zuma."

A recent leak suggests that the 1+4+4 layout will feature 9 Arm cores and 10 GPU cores. This could include 3.00 GHz Cortex-X3 cores, four 2.45 GHz Cortex-A715 cores, and four 2.15 GHz Cortex-A510 cores.

Google is on its way to setting up a new chip with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) instead of giving it to Samsung. This change will lead to a delay in the launch of the new chip which was said to be unveiled in 2024 but now it is said to be done after 2025.
