In a pivotal shift, Donald Trump broke a longstanding losing streak in Dearborn, Michigan, a city with the largest Arab-American population in the United States. This dramatic turnaround helped Trump reclaim Michigan and the presidency.

Suehaila Amen, a lifelong Democrat from Dearborn, found herself disillusioned with the two main presidential candidates. Choosing a third-party candidate instead of either of the major party nominees, Amen's decision echoed a broader sentiment in the city. Nearly half of Dearborn's 110,000 residents are of Arab descent, and Trump secured a surprising victory here, becoming the first Republican to win the city since George W. Bush in 2000.

The win came after a tough race, where Vice-President Kamala Harris trailed Trump by over 2,500 votes. The results were especially unexpected, given that Trump had previously imposed a travel ban on several predominantly Muslim countries during his first term.

The outcome also marked a broader shift in two Detroit-area cities with large Arab American populations. Harris lost support after months of local Democrats warning that the Biden-Harris administration's strong backing of Israel during the Gaza conflict alienated Arab-American voters. Some voters, disillusioned with the options, turned to Trump after his last-minute visit to the area, where he reassured voters about finding a solution to the ongoing violence in the Middle East.

Suehaila Amen expressed her discomfort with both major candidates, but ultimately chose to support Trump, citing the lack of a better alternative. "Whether it’s Trump himself or the people around him, it does pose a great deal of concern for me,” she said. “But at the end of the day when you have two evils running, what are you left with?"

As the results became clearer late into election night, the mood in the Arab-American communities of metro Detroit was described as "somber" by Dearborn City Council member Mustapha Hammoud. Yet, he noted that the result was not surprising given the political dynamics at play. Trump secured nearly 18,000 votes in Dearborn, while Harris garnered only 15,000 — a stark contrast to four years ago when Joe Biden won the city by a nearly 3-to-1 margin.
