Recently, the government has clamped down on the arbitrary fees charged by universities. Deemed universities will no longer be able to charge arbitrary fees for any professional course, including medical-engineering. The committee, constituted to suggest measures for fee control in deemed universities, has in its report recommended the right to fix fees for all types of professional courses in both government and private deemed universities from university management to a national level committee.

The UGC has also approved the recommendations of the committee. It is known that there are a total of 124 deemed universities in the country, out of which 43 are medical colleges. The exercise to control the fees in Deemed University started after the complaints of the Deemed Medical Colleges were charged wildly. The Madras High Court in September 2017 ordered the UGC to form a committee for fee control in deemed institutions as well.

It is worth noting that this committee, headed by Dr. Ramesh C. Deka, former Director of AIIMS Delhi, had said in its recommendation that the UGC must first take over the right of duty control in deemed universities. Subsequently, the UGC constituted a second committee under the chairmanship of National Board of Accreditation chairman Surendra Prasad. This committee, in its recently submitted report, recommended that the UGC delegate the right to determine fees for all types of professional courses from deemed universities to a committee. This committee, after examining their expenses for deemed universities, should determine the maximum fees for different courses. According to the news received, this report has been approved in the Commission meeting held on Wednesday (16 October). Soon its draft will be issued and people will be asked for suggestions. The official hoped that after completing all the formalities, it will be implemented as a regulation in late November or December. The fees of all deemed universities from next academic session will be decided by the UGC committee.
