NEW DELHI: Addressing the nation's growing commitment to organ donation, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya proudly announced a remarkable surge in organ donations. In 2013, a modest 5,000 donations were recorded annually, but now, the numbers have soared to over 15,000. Speaking at the 13th Indian Organ Donation Day (IODD) ceremony, Mandaviya acknowledged the profound impact of this selfless act that breathes life into others.

"Granting the gift of life to another human being is a profound service to humanity," Minister Mandaviya emphasized, lauding the families who made the courageous decision to donate their loved ones' organs. The event aimed not only to recognize the invaluable contribution of medical professionals dedicated to organ donation and transplantation but also to raise awareness about deceased organ donation.

During the event, the government unveiled significant initiatives to encourage organ donation. One noteworthy step was the removal of the age limit of 65 years for potential organ donors. The government remains resolute in its commitment to implementing more policies and reforms to promote and popularize organ donation across the nation.

The occasion also witnessed the launch of Make in India products, including the Novel Hemophilia A Rapid Card Test and Von Willebrand Disease Rapid Card Test developed by the ICMR. Additionally, the introduction of the eCARe portal by the International Health division of the Ministry of Health promises to streamline and expedite the process of transporting human remains to India from various countries.

Highlighting the importance of these developments, the Minister emphasized that Haemophilia A and Von Willebrand Disease are two of the most common inherited bleeding disorders. The diagnostic kits developed by the ICMR-National Institute of Immunohematology (ICMR-NIIH), Mumbai, not only have the potential to revolutionize diagnosis in India but also in other developing countries with limited access to diagnostic facilities.

The government's concerted efforts to boost organ donation and the advancements in medical diagnostics reflect the nation's determination to enhance the well-being of its citizens and demonstrate compassion on a global scale.
