The central government has taken a firm stance by banning 18 OTT (Over-the-Top) platforms for distributing content deemed "obscene and vulgar." This decision comes after repeated warnings were issued to these platforms regarding their content, which included pornographic material.

The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, acting under the central government, has named platforms like Uncut Adda, Dreams Films, and Prime Play among those prohibited from operating in India. Additionally, 19 websites, 10 apps, and 57 social media accounts associated with these banned OTT platforms have been disabled for public access.

The ban is a result of these platforms allegedly violating various sections of the Information Technology Act, the Indian Penal Code, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986. These violations, as stated by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, involved the portrayal of women in demeaning ways and the depiction of explicit sexual content without any societal or thematic relevance.

According to the Ministry, the banned content included scenes of nudity, sexual acts, and suggestive dialogues, often presented in inappropriate contexts such as teacher-student relationships or incestuous family dynamics.

The Ministry emphasized that such content not only crossed moral boundaries but also lacked any meaningful contribution to society or storytelling. This move by the government aims to regulate and maintain decency standards in the rapidly growing OTT space, ensuring that content aligns with cultural and societal norms.
