Govt defends Lt Gen Rawat's appointment as army chief, cites his 'outstanding' track record

Confronting assault from restriction parties, Government today supported the arrangement of Lt Gen Bipin Rawat as armed force head superseding two authorities, demanding that his operational experience and "general dynamism" tipped the scales in the officer's support.

The Defense Ministry sources likewise stated that choice of Army boss is the sole right of the legislature and it is constructed absolutely with respect to justifying, independent of the Corps to which the officer initially had a place.

The "extraordinary" reputation of Lt Gen Rawat, an Infantry officer, as Commanding Officer of 19 Division in J&K and his commonality with the working of the Army Headquarters and MoD were referred to by the Ministry as the purposes of his determination for the top position.

The Ministry sources said all officers in the board of officers in the rank of armed force authorities are capable and the most suitable are chosen.

"Notwithstanding, it must be stressed that the privilege of selecting the most qualified from the board is that of the administration," sources said.
