"Govt is mindful of current inflation": RBI Governor

NEW DELHI:  Shaktikanta Das, the governor of the Reserve Bank of India, said on Wednesday that the government is "mindful" of the present inflation scenario and that it is up to the Centre to implement further supply-side measures to keep the price rises under check.

"I am sure the government is mindful of the present inflation scenario, and it is up to the government to decide on any additional supply-side measures that they see necessary," Das said at the central bank's usual post-policy press conference.

The comments came after the RBI raised its average consumer price inflation estimate for FY23 from 5.7 percent to 6.7 percent, citing supply-side issues for the majority of the rise, with food inflation accounting for three-quarters of the increase in the estimate.

Last month, the government reduced fuel excise charges by Rs 9.5 per litre, easing the burden on the average man and lowering input expenses. It has also taken additional steps, such as prohibiting or limiting the export of food products such as wheat and sugar. Das stated that it is not his place to predict or comment on the specific measures that may be taken.

"It is up to the government to decide, and I am confident that they will. They will take the necessary steps if and when a demand arises," he said.
