The Delhi government has announced a ban on the production, sale, and use of firecrackers in the national capital, effective until January 1, 2025. This step has been taken to control air pollution during the upcoming winter season, Environment Minister Gopal Rai said on Monday. The ban also extends to the online sale and delivery of firecrackers.

To ensure strict enforcement, an action plan will be developed in coordination with the Delhi Police, Delhi Pollution Control Committee, and the Revenue Department. Minister Rai emphasized that the move is a key component of Delhi's broader winter action plan, which focuses on 21 areas to reduce pollution levels.

To ensure the effective enforcement of this ban, an action plan will be developed in collaboration with key authorities, including the Delhi Police, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee, and the Revenue Department. These departments will work together to monitor and prevent any violations of the ban.

Minister Gopal Rai highlighted that this ban is a significant part of the Delhi government's broader winter action plan, which targets pollution reduction through 21 focus points. These measures include curbing other contributors to poor air quality, such as vehicular emissions, construction dust, and industrial pollutants.

Air pollution in Delhi typically worsens during the winter due to a combination of factors, including cooler temperatures, stagnant air, and the burning of firecrackers, especially during festivals. Firecrackers emit harmful chemicals like sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter, which can severely impact air quality and cause respiratory problems.

In recent years, the city has faced alarming levels of pollution during winter, leading to health emergencies. The government is taking preventive steps by introducing this ban early, hoping to minimize the seasonal spike in pollution and protect public health.
