PUDUCHERRY: With the onset of the northeast monsoon, the Union Territory of Puducherry has commenced an awareness campaign against dengue and chikungunya.

12 cars have been sent out by the UT health department as part of a campaign to raise awareness of communicable diseases.

During the two-week campaign, the vehicles will be operated in all locations through Primary health centres, Community welfare centres, and health wellness centres, a senior official with the health departments said.

Residents of the territory are asked not to let water stagnate in plastic plates, glasses, open wells, coconut shells, tyres, or other containers during the awareness drive. The health department experts said that the main cause of the spread of diseases carried by mosquitoes was water clogging in stormwater drains and collecting in cups, coconut shells, etc.

"A significant obstacle to preventing dengue is the water buildup in stormwater drains and the gathering of water in plates, glasses, and coconut shells. In order to avoid dengue, the government is concentrating on reducing its sources, thus there hasn't been an increase in cases " the official said.

Staff from the Puducherry health department and ASHA volunteers are on the street to spread the word about the need to avoid breeding places including coconut shells, plastic plates, and glasses.

It should be mentioned that 14 dengue cases and 28 chikungunya cases have been reported in the first two days of November.

If the symptoms of dengue are not promptly addressed, the disease may be marked as potentially fatal. Dengue is primarily characterised by "fever, exhaustion, severe headache, bodily ache, and vomiting."
