Govt taking steps to address the impact of large online retailers on small businesses: Piyush Goyal

Union Minister Piyush Goyal has expressed concern about the impact of major online retailers negatively impacting small players, and the government will ensure that consumers will have high-quality products at affordable prices in the long run. He claimed that he was taking steps to ensure that. With the Supreme Court disallowing Amazon and Flipkart’s petition against the Competition Commission of India, the minister told Lok Sabha that the influence of major online retailers was their financial strength and small retailers were closed. 

Goyal flagged concerns about the influence of big online retailers that is adversely impacting small players and asserted that the government is taking steps to ensure that in the long run, consumers get good quality products at affordable prices.. In India, there are around six crore small retail businesses giving employments to nearly 12-13 crore people, he noted. He said big online retailers would have a major influence and eventually consumers might not have a choice but to buy things at a higher price. Asserting that the government is taking strict action with respect to the influence of big online retailers, he said the Competition Commission of India (CCI) and the Enforcement Directorate are looking into the issue.
