The union government wants to speed up the sale of non-strategic public sector firms. According to government sources, the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), in collaboration with NITI Aayog, the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM), and the Department of Expenditure, is in the process of identifying non-strategic central public sector undertakings (PSUs) for closure or privatisation.
"There are over a hundred non-strategic PSUs. The DPE is in charge of companies like Balmer Lawrie, RCF (Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers), and NFL (National Fertilizers Ltd). Although there are some temporary barriers in the way, the procedure is now being accelerated. The Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) will shortly submit a proposal to the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) for in-principle approval on central PSUs that must be shut down "An official stated.
"The strategic sales of BPCL (Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd), CONCOR (Container Corporation of India Ltd), and SCI are still being considered (Shipping Corp of India). On the timelines, no final decision has been made yet "Added the source.
