The alcohol addiction, the excessive alcoholism resulted in yet another shocking incident that happened in Vaniyambadi. The police registered a case against two sexagenarians for attempting to kill a 13-year-old boy who is a grandson of one of the accused in a bid to steal his silver waist cord (aranakayiru) to buy liquor on Thursday.
Ganesan and Chitra from Vaniyambadi working as a coolies, leave their son Satish (13) studying Class 6 with Chitra’s father Velu whenever go for work as they would return only late in the evening. As a motive to collect money to buy liquor, on Wednesday Velu and his friend Balan decided to steal the silver waist cord of Satish. Both of them took the boy to an isolated spot and attempted to remove the waist cord. When Satish resisted, both of them strangled him and in the impact the boy fainted.
Both the elderly thought sathish was dead and so after removing the waist cord, they threw the boy into nearby bushes, pledged the cord in a pawn shop and then purchased liquor. Satish, who regained consciousness after awhile, ran home and informed his parents who then admitted the victim to the Vaniyambadi Government Hospital. His mother Chitra complained to the police and based on it police arrested both Velu and Balan and investigation is further going on.
