Balbir Singh Sr., a great hockey player and three-time Olympic gold medalist, suffered a heart attack on Tuesday morning, due to which his condition remains serious. He is currently admitted in the Medical ICU of Fortis Hospital in Mohali and has been placed on ventilator. Giving an update on his condition, Kabir Singh Bhomiya, grandson of this 96-year-old great, said, "Nana ji suffered a heart attack at nine in the morning. He is currently placed in a medical ICU. He was admitted to the hospital in a very serious condition on Friday, May 8 due to multiple organs being affected. There was a slight improvement in his condition but now his condition is serious." He added," The doctor will keep an eye on his condition continuously for the next 24 to 48 hours and only then a further statement will be issued regarding his condition. He is still kept on ventilator.” Punjab CM Amarinder Singh wished him well soon.

The chief minister tagged him and tweeted, "Sad to know that Balbir ji suffered a heart attack today and he is in ICU in critical condition. I pray for your speedy recovery.” Balbir Sr. was taken to a personal hospital from his residence in Sector-36 on Friday due to deteriorating health. He lives with his daughter Sushbir and Kabir. He had high fever on Thursday night. At first his family gave him a sponge bath at home, but when his condition did not improve, he was admitted to the hospital.

Balbir Sr. was discharged from PGIMER in January last year after spending 108 days in the hospital. He was undergoing treatment for pneumonia in this hospital. He played a key role in winning India's gold medal in the Olympics in London (1948), Helsinki (1952) and Melbourne (1956). He scored five goals in a 6–1 win over the Netherlands at the Helsinki Olympics and the record is still intact. He was also the manager of the 1975 World Cup-winning Indian hockey team.
