Sydney: Former Australian cricketer and ex-coach of the Indian men's cricket team, Greg Chappell, is experiencing financial difficulties. While he is not in dire straits, he acknowledges that he is not living a luxurious life. Friends have set up a fundraiser page to support Chappell and his wife in their retirement.
Chappell stated, "I’m not on the bones of my a**e. I certainly don’t want it to sound like we’re in desperate straits, because we’re not — but we’re not living in luxury either. I think most people assume that, because we played cricket, that we are all living in the lap of luxury. While I’m certainly not crying poor, we’re not reaping in the benefits that today’s players are."
The 75-year-old former cricketer revealed that his friends initiated the fundraiser to ensure a comfortable retirement for him and his wife. Chappell also expressed concern about other players from his era who are facing more dire financial circumstances. He believes that the cricketing world should do more to support former players from his generation, considering their contributions to the sport.
Greg Chappell had a distinguished cricket career, featuring in 87 Test matches and 74 ODIs. He accumulated over 7,000 runs in Test cricket and more than 2,000 runs in ODIs.
