After getting the exemption in lockdown, the GST Council meeting is to be held this month. In this meeting, the council will also discuss waiving late fees in the direction of providing relief to taxpayers. In this meeting, there will be discussion about waiving the late fee for not filing GST returns for the period from August 2017 to January 2020. The Central Indirect Taxes and Customs Department (CBIC) has given this information in a tweet. The GST Council can meet on 14th of this month.

In its tweet, the CBIC said, "In the next meeting of the GST Council, there will be a discussion about waiving the late fees for non-filing of GST returns for the period from August 2017 to January 2020." CBIC said that GST started from August 2017 and taxpayers were demanding that late fees be waived in GST returns which need to be filed from August 2017.

Earlier the government has extended the date of filing GST returns for February, March, April and May 2020 to help small businesses with less than five crore turnover in the wake of Coronavirus outbreak. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced to extend the filing time of these months' GIST returns till June 2020. Late fees have also been waived by the government for this period.
