New Delhi: The Election Commission is likely to announce the dates for the Gujarat Assembly elections on Wednesday (November 2). Citing the tradition followed in 2017, the Election Commission had earlier this month not announced the schedule for the Gujarat polls along with the Himachal Pradesh poll dates. Himachal Pradesh will go to polls in a single phase on November 12 and the counting of votes will take place on December 8.
The Election Commission, while keeping the date of counting of votes for Himachal Pradesh almost a month after polling, had clearly indicated that the counting of votes for Gujarat will also be held on December 8. In 2017, elections were announced on different dates in the two states, but the counting was held simultaneously on December 18.
Assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh were held simultaneously in 1998, 2007 and 2012, according to the Election Commission website. The term of the 182-member Gujarat Assembly ends on February 18, 2023.
