National Fish Farmers Day 2024: Gujarat is gearing up to observe National Fish Farmers Day on July 10th in Anand and July 11th in Ukai. This annual event serves as a crucial platform to support the aquaculture industry, educate fish farmers about government schemes, and highlight technological advancements.

Gujarat's Blue Economy Potential

With India’s longest coastline spanning 1600 km, Gujarat holds immense potential for advancing the country’s blue economy. The state government has implemented various incentives and policies to boost fish production and improve the economic well-being of farmers in this sector. Thanks to these initiatives and central government support, Gujarat ranks second in marine fish production nationwide.

Steady Fish Production Trends

While Gujarat excels in marine fish production, it stands fifth in overall fish production across the country. Over the past four years, the state has consistently maintained an average annual production of approximately 8.38 lakh metric tonnes. In the fiscal year 2022-23, Gujarat’s marine fish production reached 7,03,000 metric tonnes, complemented by inland fish production of 1,94,422 metric tonnes, resulting in a total of 8,97,422 metric tonnes. Projections for 2023-24 indicate even more promising figures, with marine fish production expected to touch 7,02,050 metric tonnes and inland fish production projected at 2,13,140 metric tonnes, bringing the total estimated fish production to 9,15,190 metric tonnes.

Boosting Aquaculture with Government Support

The Central Government’s Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) aims to enhance fish production and livelihoods for aquaculture farmers nationwide. In Gujarat, the union government sanctioned projects worth Rs.286.53 crore in 2022-23 and over Rs.61.55 crore in 2023-24 under this scheme. As a result, the fisheries sector is gaining momentum, benefiting from increased production and improved livelihoods.

Gujarat’s Strategic Measures

The Gujarat government has taken strategic steps to advance the fisheries sector. These include reduced VAT rates on diesel, subsidies for kerosene and petrol purchases, land allocation for shrimp farming, infrastructure improvements in roads and electricity, and enhanced port facilities tailored to support small-scale fish farmers. Additionally, efforts are underway to establish four new fishing ports in Madhwad, Navabandar, Veraval-2, and Sutrapada. This concerted effort underscores Gujarat's commitment to sustainable aquaculture growth and economic prosperity in the region.
