Gujarat police detains 8 Congress MLAs due to this reason

AHMEDABAD: 8 MLAs of the Congress and 20 others, who are going to join the protest against fencing in six villages near the Statue of Unity at Kevadia in Narmada district of Gujrat, have been taken into custody by the police on the way. The tribals are opposing the fence being imposed by the state government. Inspector RN Rathwa of Rajpipla Police Station has said that eight Congress MLAs and 20 others were detained as soon as they left the DM office here to go to Kevadia to support the tribals protesting against fencing in six villages.

Villagers of Nawagam, Wagharia, Limdi, Kothi, Gora and Kevadia, located near the Statue of Unity, have been affected by the fencing. Congress MLA Anil Joshira, PD Vasava, Chandrikaben Baria, Punabhai Ghamit and other local leaders are opposing the fencing on behalf of Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNNL), claiming that the land was acquired around year 1960.

In a memorandum to the DM of Narmada district, the legislators have questioned the government's move to erect fences and asked if written permission was taken for such work during the lockdown, which caused the local people to protest. State Home Minister Pradeep Singh Jadeja issued a statement, accusing the Congress of misleading the tribals. He said that the flood work is being done with the permission of the Gujarat High Court, which has removed the stay order from the acquisition process.
