BANGALORE: Goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu has extended his stay with the Bangalore Foot Ball Club till 2028, the Indian Super League (ISL) club announced on Friday.
An official statement from Bangalore Foot Ball Club read as under: "Bangalore FC have secured the long-term presence of goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu between their sticks as the custodian has put pen to paper on a 5-year contract that will keep him at the club till 2028."
The Bangalore FC goalkeeper took to Twitter to express his delight at extending his stay with the Blues and said: "What's a second 5-year stint with the same football club in India? Unprecedented? Unthinkable? Unorthodox? Unreal? Then again, when have we been fans of the ordinary?" The 31-year-old who joined the club in 2017 after becoming the first Indian player to play in the Union of European Football Associations League at Norway's Stabaek FC has been a mainstay in BangaloreFC's starting XI since and has gone from strength to strength also making the starting spot in the Indian national team his own.
Sandhu has won three trophies during this time with Bangalore FC, including the Indian Super League (ISL) championship in 2018–19, the Super Cup in 2018, and most recently the Durand Cup in 2022.
Only Amrinder Singh has more Hero ISL starts than Sandhu's 108, making him the second goalie with a higher total.
After the announcement, Sandhu said, "The way the club and the city welcomed me, and the love exhibited by the people makes me believe that here is the perfect place for me to continue my path.
Since signing the deal, Sandhu's first task will be to lead BangaloreFC into the Hero ISL playoffs. The Blues are currently in seventh position, although they are only one point behind Odisha FC, who on Thursday could only draw with Chennaiyin FC.
