Guru Arjan (15 April 1563 - 30 May 1606) was the first of the two Gurus martyred in Sikhism and the fifth of the ten total Sikh Gurus. Guru Arjan compiled the first official edition of the Sikh Granth, called the Adi Granth, which later expanded into the Guru Granth Sahib.

Guru Arjan  was born in Goindwal, Punjab, the youngest son of Bhai Jetha, who later became Mata Bhani, daughter of Guru Ram Das and Guru Amar Das. He completed the construction of Darbar Sahib in Amritsar, the fourth Sikh Guru established the city and built a pool. Guru Arjan compiled the hymns of Adi Guru and other saints, the first edition of the Sikh scripture, and established it in Harimandir Sahib. 

Guru Arjun Dev ji was the protector of religion and true lover of humanity. He was the fifth Guru of the Sikhs and his name is recorded on the pages of history. Tell all of you that he spent his entire life in social service. He is said to have been imprisoned by Mughal Emperor Jahangir in Lahore in 1606 and was sentenced to death during that time. In fact, Guru Arjun Dev ji was a protector of religion and a true servant of humanity and had respect for all religions. Akbar was the murid of Guru Arjun Dev when it was mughal period.

It is said that when Akbar passed away at that time, Guru Arjun Dev did not get that much importance during Jahangir's reign. At that time, when Shahzada Khusro was ordered to be expelled by the Mughal ruler Jahangir, Guru Arjun Dev gave him shelter. It was because of this that Jahangir sentenced him to death. Tell you that Guru Arjun Dev passed away on 30th May, 1606 and he performed this ardas at the last moment of his life. "Your key seemed sweet. Hari Namu Padarath Nanak Mange."

Guru Arjun Dev ji was born on April 15, 1563 at Goindwal Sahib. His father was Guru Ram Das, the fourth Guru of the Sikhs, and his mother's name was Biwi Bhani. Guru Arjun Dev is said to have been interested in dharma karma since childhood and at the same time he was very fond of spirituality. He considered social service to be his greatest religion and deed. He was married to Mother Ganga at the age of 16 and in 1582, he was appointed as the fifth guru by Ramdas, the fourth Guru of the Sikhs, to replace Arjun Devji as his fifth guru.
