Guru Dutt, the popular actor, director, and filmmaker of Hindi films, was born on 10th October. Guru Dutt was born on 9 July 1925 in Bangalore to Shivshankar Rao Padukone and Vasanti Padukone. His parents were Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmins of Konkan. His father was the headmaster of a school in the early days, who later started working in a bank. His mother was an ordinary housewife who later became a teacher in a school. His mother was sixteen years old when Guru Dutt was born. Vasanti used to write short stories in addition to private tuition at home and also translate Bengali novels into the Kannada language.

Guru Dutt spent the early days of his childhood in Bhawanipur area of Calcutta which had an intellectual and cultural impact on him. His childhood was influenced by financial troubles and the strained relationship of his parents. He got such a deep impression of Bengali culture that he changed his childhood name from Vasant Kumar Shivshankar Padukone to Guru Dutt.

The grandmother of Guru Dutt used to perform aarti by burning lamps in the evening, and in the light of Diya, he used to make different types of pictures of his fingers on the wall. Dutt entered the Indian film industry in 1944, working as a choreographer in Prabhat Studios. Guru Dutt was one of the greatest icons of commercial Indian cinema. Although he made less than fifty films, they are believed to be the best to come from Bollywood's Golden Age. His movies have the ability to reach out to the common man and his movies went on to become trendsetters that influenced Bollywood cinema to a large extent.
