गुरू ब्रह्मा गुरू विष्णु, गुरु देवो महेश्वरा | गुरु साक्षात परब्रह्म, तस्मै श्री गुरुवे नमः ||

Which refers to teacher is the keen of gods and to Guru is none other than Brahma (the god of creation), Vishnu (the god of sustenance) and Shiva (the god of destruction), since it is the Guru who creates, sustains knowledge and destroys ignorance. By doing so he liberates the one from the trap of demonic illusions, thereby attaining salvation. For this, we bow down with utter gratitude to the Guru.

In Hinduism Guru is treated as equal to God since it is Guru or teacher who removes darkness, makes us knowledgeable and brings positivity in one’s life. In Hinduism one day is celebrated as Guru Purnima. There are many reasons behind celebration of Guru Purnima some believe that Shiva became the first guru, as he began the transmission of Yoga to the Saptarishis. While some believe that it is the birthday of Guru Shri Ved-Vyasa and that he finished writing all the hindu Granths (treatise) on this day. This day is celebrated to offer respect to spiritual and academic gurus. This day is celebrated on Purnima i.e. full moon day of lunar month or Shukla-Paksha of Ashad. This year Guru-Purnima will be celebrated on Monday, July 3, 2023. Guru Purnima is not just celebrated in India but also in Nepal and Bhutan by Hindus, Jains and Buddhists.

In Buddhism it is believed that Gautam Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath Uttar-Pradesh five weeks after he achieved enlightenment. His teaching helped shape people for better. And so his followers devoted this day to him.  While on this day in Jainism Lord Mahavira got his first follower and he officially became a Guru and so his devotees started celebrating Guru Purnima.
