LEBANON: UN Visiting Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged the international community to enhance support for Lebanon on Sunday, as per reports.
At a joint press conference with Lebanese President Michel Aoun at Baabda Palace, Guterres said, "I believe the international community did not offer enough help for Lebanon, Jordan, and other countries that have opened their doors and hearts to receive refugees." Guterres urged all UN member states to step up their support for Lebanon and assume their full obligations. "Lebanon requires more assistance since it is going through really difficult conditions," he remarked.
Guterres also expressed gratitude to Lebanon for its great hospitality at a time when several wealthy countries were closing their gates to refugees. He also urged Lebanese politicians to address the current economic situation and prevent institutions from collapsing. Guterres reaffirmed the UN's unwavering support for Lebanon, promising that the Lebanese army and other military institutions will continue to receive international help.
President Michel Aoun stressed the importance of finding a solution to allow Syrian refugees to return to their homeland, emphasising the crisis's huge burden on Lebanon, which is already beset by issues.
