VARANASI: The Gyanvapi Mosque case, concerning a dispute over the Gyanvapi mosque complex in Varanasi, saw a recent development at the Allahabad High Court. On Tuesday, the court adjourned the case to August 12. The hearing addressed a plea challenging the Varanasi District Court's decision that denied the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) permission to survey the Wuzkhana area within the mosque premises, except for the Shiv Ling.

The Wuzkhana area had been sealed since 2022 following a Supreme Court order. ASI's investigation revealed evidence suggesting the existence of a Hindu Temple predating the mosque's construction on the site.

On December 18, 2023, ASI submitted its findings on the Gyanvapi mosque complex to the Varanasi district court after completing cleaning work in the Wuzkhana area, as mandated by the Supreme Court.

The Gyanvapi Mosque has been a contentious issue, with some claiming it was built on the remains of the Kashi Vishwanath temple. Various petitions in courts, including the Supreme Court, Allahabad High Court, and Varanasi district court, have addressed different aspects of this dispute.

This legal battle traces back to a 1991 petition filed in Varanasi, seeking the restoration of Gyanvapiland to the Kashi Vishwanath temple. Allegedly, the mosque was constructed under the orders of Aurangzeb, who purportedly demolished a section of the temple in the 16th century.

ASI began its survey in August 2023, with multiple extensions granted for the final report.
