New Delhi: On February 8th, violence erupted in the Haldwani area of Uttarakhand as a Muslim mob attacked authorities during an anti-encroachment drive targeting a madrasa built on illegally encroached government land near the Banbhoolpura police station. The rioting mob engaged in stone pelting and arson, resulting in casualties and injuries to over 100 police personnel. The situation escalated as the mob surrounded the Banbhoolpura police station, set vehicles ablaze, and attacked municipal corporation workers and SDM officials. To restore law and order, the local administration imposed a curfew and issued shoot-at-sight orders.

The Municipal Corporation team had arrived to demolish the illegal structure located in Malik's garden under the Banbhoolpura area. Despite prior notices to the madrasa management regarding the illegal construction, no documents were provided to prove its legality. The demolition exercise was initiated following a court order, despite a plea challenging it being heard by the Uttarakhand High Court.

This incident is not an isolated case, as Haldwani has previously witnessed protests and violence over government actions against illegal encroachments. Last year, protests erupted over the eviction of nearly 4000 families occupying land owned by the Indian Railways. While the Railways department emphasized the need to clear encroachments hindering development efforts, the Supreme Court intervened, directing authorities to find a solution ensuring full rehabilitation of affected residents.

The issue of illegal encroachments extends beyond Haldwani, with rampant cases across Uttarakhand. The state government has been actively addressing the problem, reclaiming thousands of acres of encroached land, particularly in forest areas. Measures include demolishing illegal structures and removing encroachments, with a focus on preserving forest land and addressing the menace of Land Jihad.

Despite legal interventions and government efforts, challenges persist as illegal encroachers resist eviction, often resorting to violence. The recent incident underscores the ongoing battle against illegal encroachments and the need for sustained efforts to uphold the rule of law and protect public property.
