The Hambantota International Port (HIP) in Sri Lanka has announced that it has become the first port in the South Asian country to meet internationally recognised integrated management system requirements.

According to reports, the port in southern Sri Lanka said in a statement on Sunday that it had received ISO accreditation on quality, environmental protection, and occupational health and safety standards following a process that began in January and an external audit conducted by Bureau Veritas Lanka in July.

The accreditation would help "increase marketing and sales activities as well as enhance and improve staff performance," according to Ravi Jayawickrame, CEO of Hambantota International Port Services Company. It "reinforces our commitment to safeguard the environment and maintain sustainability, as well as to protect the workplace, preventing work-related injury and ill-health, and providing further incentive to consistently enhance our working conditions," Jayawickrame said.
