Karot: The Karot Hydropower Project, a key pilot project of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), onSaturday successfully closed the diversion tunnel gates, starting reservoir impoundment.

The Karot hydroelectric project in Pakistan's eastern Punjab province is the fourth level of the five cascade hydropower stations planned for the Jhelum River, and was funded by the China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) with a total investment of roughly 1.74 billion US dollars. The start of the first CPEC hydropower investment project's reservoir impoundment is a significant milestone that will prepare the way for wet testing of the generating units, according to Wang Yi, Karot hydropower project team head at the CTG site.

Since the project's inception in April 2015, Chinese and Pakistani engineers and workers have worked together to overcome various challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic, and have thus achieved a number of milestones, including the river closure and the lifting of the first rotor, according to Wang. Around 95 percent of the project has been completed to date, and the station's four units are projected to generate energy in the first half of 2022, according to Wang.
