From the age of 6, Watson wanted to become an actress and for many years she trained in an Oxford branch of Stagecoach Theater Arts. It was a part-time theater school where she learned music, dance and acting. By the age of 10 she had acted in various stagecoach productions and school plays including Arthur: The Young Years and The Happy Prince. The film Harry Potter is adaptation of British writer J. K. Rowling's best-selling novel, the casting of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (released in the United States as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone) began in 1999. The lead role of Harry Potter and co-starring Harry's best friends, Hermione Grenzer and Ron Wesley, meant a lot to the casting directors. Casting personnel found Watson through an Oxford Theater teacher and the producers were very impressed with his confidence. After giving eight auditions (audition), producer David Heyman told Watson and fellow applicants, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint, that they would be cast for the roles of Hermione, Harry and Ron respectively. Rowling supported Watson from the very first screen test.

The 2001 release of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was Watson's first screen performance. The film broke opening day sales and opening weekend earnings records and became the highest-grossing film of 2001. The critics praised the performances of these three lead actors. Watson was particularly praised in all three. The Daily Telegraph called her performance "commendable" and IGN stated that she "prevailed on the show". Watson was nominated for five awards for her performance in The Philosopher's Stone. She also won the Young Artist Award for lead young actress. A year later, Watson re-starred as Hermione in the series' sequel, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Although the film received mixed reviews, critics were positive about the performance of the lead actors. The Los Angeles Times stated that Watson and her fellow actors have matured into films, while The Times criticized director Chris Columbus for being given a below-normal job for Watson's most popular character. Watson also received an Otto Award from the German magazine Bravo for her performance.
