Subhadra Kumari Chauhan was born on the day of Nagpanchami to a zamindar family of Ramnath Singh in a village called Nihalpur near Allahabad. From childhood, she started writing poems.  Her compositions were full of nationalism. Subhadra Kumari Chauhan has 4 sisters and 2 brothers. Her father Thakur Ramnath Singh was a lover of education and her early education started under his supervision. In 1919, after marriage with Thakur Laxman Singh of Khandwa, she came to Jabalpur.

She was the first woman to participate in Gandhiji's non-cooperation movement in 1921. She had also gone to jail 2 times. A biography of Subhadra Kumari Chauhan, her daughter, Sudha Chauhan has written in a book called 'Mila Tej Se Tej'. It has been published by Hans Prakashan, Allahabad. She was a creator as well as one of the freedom fighters. Dr. Mangala Anuja's book recounts the life of Subhadra Kumari Chauhan's literary and freedom struggle. She is also underlining the leadership in the freedom movement through her poetry. She died on 15 February 1947 in a car accident.

Fiction: ' Bheere Moti' is her first story collection. It has a total of 15 stories in Bhagnavshesh, Holi, Papipet, Manjhalirani, Parivartan, Drishtikon, Kadam Ke phool, Kismat, Machhuye Ki Beti, Ekadashi, Ahuti, Thati, Amrai, Anurodh, and Gramina! The language of these stories is simple spoken language. Most stories focus on female discourse. Her second story collection, titled Unmdini, was published in 1934. There are 9 stories in this, Unmdini, Asmanjas, Abhiyukt, Sone ki Kanthi, Nari Hriday, Pavitra Irshya, Anguthi Ki khoj, Chadhha Dimag, and Vaishya ki Ladki. The main tone of all these stories is the family social scene itself. 'Sidhe Sadhe Chitra' is the third and final story collection of Subhadra Kumari Chauhan. There are 14 stories in total. Rupa, Kailashi Nani, Bialha, Kalyani, Do Saathi, Professor Mitra, Durachari and Mangala - the themes of 8 stories are female-dominated family social problems. Hingwala, Rahi, Tanga Vala, and Gulab Singh stories are based on national themes. Subhadra Kumari Chauhan wrote a total of 16 stories and with her wide narrative vision, she is well-known in the Hindi literature world as a very popular storyteller!
