Today is the birthday of actress Sumita Sanyal, one of the famous actresses of the 80 and '90s. Born on 9 October 1945 in Darjeeling, Sumita made her own identity in Bollywood. Sumita gained a lot of fame in Hindi films as well as Bengali films. Sumita played the role of Renu in Rajesh Khanna's film Anand. And since then Sumita started being recognized by this character. Sumita played Amitabh Bachchan's girlfriend Renu in this film.

Sumita had changed her name for the sake of films. Sumita's real name was Manjula Sanyal. Vibhuti Laha, director of the 1960 film 'Khoka Babur', named Sumita as Suchaurita. Later, director Kanak Mukhopadhyay shortened his name to Sumita. Since then, her name has become known in the film fraternity. Sumita has worked in more than 40 Bengali films.

In Bollywood, Sumita worked in successful films like 'Guddi', 'Ashirwad', and 'Mere Apne' in addition to the film 'Anand'. In addition to Bengali films, she has also acted in Tamil, Telugu, Malayali films and many TV serials. Sumita was married to film editor Subodh Roy in 1971. She also has a son, after which this famous actress died on July 9, 2017, in Kolkata at the age of 71.
