Politics is on to give Padma Shri to music composer and singer Adnan Sami. Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena has opposed the award to Adnan, while Union Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has linked it to Shaheen Bagh. He said, "I think Shaheen Bagh is listening." Hardeep Singh Puri tweeted, 'Congratulations to the talented Mr. Adnan Sami for the Padma Shri award. He is one of the many people who expressed confidence in the Constitution of India and were given Indian citizenship. I hope Shaheen Bagh is listening. India does not believe in taking away citizenship.'

In Shaheen Bagh, people have been protesting against the citizenship law and NRC for the last 40 days. Earlier, Ameya Khopkar, president of the cinema unit of MNS, opposed the award of Padma Shri to Adnan Sami, saying, 'He is not a real Indian citizen. MNS is of the view that no award should be given to him. We condemn the decision to honor him with the Padma Shri and demand that the decision be withdrawn.'

Adnan Sami was born in Pakistan. His father Arshad Sami Khan was a Pakistan diplomat while his mother was a resident of Jammu and Kashmir. In 2001, he first came to India on a one-year tourist visa. He had requested for citizenship on humanitarian grounds, which was accepted by the central government.
