Hariyali Teej 2024, the vibrant and auspicious Hindu festival, is celebrated during the monsoon season on the third day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Sawan. This festival commemorates the divine union of Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati.

The festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm, especially in North Indian states such as Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Bihar. Traditions and celebrations vary across regions, but the essence remains the same. On this day, married Hindu women fast and pray for the well-being of their husbands.

Hariyali Teej is typically observed two days before Nag Panchami. In 2024, it falls on Shukla Paksha Tritiya and will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 7. The muhurat timings for Hariyali Teej are:

Tritiya Tithi Begins: August 6, 2024 (Tuesday) at 07:52 PM

Tritiya Tithi Ends: August 7, 2024 (Wednesday) at 10:05 PM

History and Significance

According to legend, Lord Shiva accepted Parvati as his consort on this day. Goddess Parvati is said to have performed intense penance for 107 births to win Shiva's love. In her 108th birth, during Shukla Paksha Tritiya of Shravan, she finally succeeded and was known as 'Teej Mata'.

Parvati traveled to the Himalayas to symbolize unwavering love, creating a Shiva Lingam from sand. In her past lives, she renounced worldly ties and lived on dry leaves to gain Shiva's love. Unaware of her devotion due to his vow of celibacy, Shiva eventually recognized her steadfastness and accepted her as his wife.

Celebrations
Hariyali Teej is marked by various rituals and traditions, including fasting and prayer by married women for their husbands' well-being. The festival features vibrant processions, traditional songs, dances, and swings decorated with flowers. Women adorn themselves in green attire, symbolizing the lushness of the monsoon season, and apply henna on their hands, further enhancing the festive spirit.
