Pitru Paksha is a time when people perform special rituals for the peace of the soul of their ancestors and their blessings. This period starts every year from the full moon of Bhadrapada Shukla and lasts till Ashwin Amavasya, i.e. for 15 days. During this time people perform rituals like Shradhkarma, Pinddaan and Tarpan, so that the soul of their ancestors may rest in peace. But how did Pitru Paksha start, let us know:

Pitru Paksha started due to Karna's mistake

According to Mahabharata, the tradition of Pitru Paksha started due to a mistake of Danvir Karna. On the 17th day of the Mahabharata war, Arjuna killed Karna. When Karna's soul reached Yamaloka, he got a place in heaven because he had donated a lot of money throughout his life. But here he got only precious gems and jewelry as food, not food. Karna asked Devraj Indra about this, why he was not getting food. Indra told that he donated a lot of money, gold and jewelry in life, but never donated food. Apart from this, he did not even perform the Shraddha of his ancestors. Therefore, he was not getting food in heaven.

Karna's Shraddh and the beginning of Pitru Paksha

Karna said that he did not know about this and what can he do for his ancestors now. On the behest of Indra, Karna's soul was sent to earth for 15 days. Coming to earth, Karna donated food and grains in these 15 days. Thus, the tradition of Pitru Paksha started and this tradition is going on even today.
