Gurnam Singh Charuni, a prominent leader amidst the ongoing farmers' protest, announced on February 19th that farmers from Haryana will join the agitation after February 21st if the government fails to include oilseeds and bajra for procurement.
Expressing the farmers' stance, Charuni emphasized the importance of these crops alongside grains and wheat. While the government has agreed to procure pulses, maize, and cotton, the absence of oilseeds and bajra remains a point of contention.
Charuni urged the government to consider the significance of including oilseeds and bajra in the procurement process, likening their importance to that of other crops already listed. He stressed that if the government does not agree to include these crops by the given deadline, Haryana farmers will join the protest.
"We have given time until February 21st for the government to make a decision. If they do not include oilseeds and bajra for procurement, we will be compelled to escalate our agitation," Charuni said.
The decision to potentially expand the protest to include Haryana came after careful consideration among farmers. Charuni emphasized that the government's response by February 21st will determine the course of action for the protesting farmers.
The inclusion of oilseeds and bajra in the procurement list is perceived as crucial by farmers, who argue that these crops are essential for their livelihoods. The ongoing protest, which has been ongoing for several months, has seen farmers from various states uniting to demand reforms in agricultural laws and fair pricing for their produce.
