Haryana's Political Tensions Rise as Assembly Election Nears: Recruitment Freeze Impacts Job Seekers

As Haryana gears up for the 2024 Assembly elections, political tensions in the state have surged. The recent decision by the Election Commission to freeze ongoing government recruitment processes has added fuel to the fire. This move follows pressure from the Congress party's 'Bharti Roko Gang,' which has actively opposed the current recruitment practices.

BJP's Employment Record

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has governed Haryana for the past decade, is seeking a third consecutive term. Since 2014, the party has facilitated around 150,000 government jobs in the state, positioning itself as a supporter of job creation. The BJP has emphasized transparency in recruitment, advocating a merit-based system with its 'no slips, no bribery' motto. This approach has been well-received by job seekers in Haryana.

Congress Party's Intervention

Despite the BJP's efforts, the Congress party has managed to stall several recruitment processes. Affected sectors include:

  • 5,600 posts in Haryana Police
  • Teaching and physical education positions through the Haryana Staff Selection Commission
  • Various roles within the Haryana Public Service Commission

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has raised concerns about potential violations of the electoral code related to these recruitments. Although the Election Commission reviewed the situation and determined that the recruitment processes began before the election announcement and complied with existing guidelines, it recommended postponing the announcement of results until after the elections.

Impact on Job Seekers

The halt in recruitment has led to approximately 24,000 pending job results in Haryana. The Haryana Staff Selection Commission has results ready for around 1,500 first and second-category posts, 16,500 group 56 and 57 posts, and 6,000 police positions, awaiting approval for announcement. The Commission has indicated that results for about 5,000 to 7,000 posts might be finalized by the election date, with 6,000 constable recruitment results already prepared.

The youth of Haryana have voiced their frustration through protests against the Congress party’s interference. Demonstrations at former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda's residence led to clashes with police, underscoring the discontent among the unemployed.

As the election approaches, Haryana’s political landscape is increasingly charged. The BJP aims to retain power while the Congress seeks to leverage anti-incumbency sentiments, setting the stage for a crucial electoral battle.
