Bengaluru: A case of vandalism of the idol of Goddess Mahakali on Friday, built during the Hoysala period, has been reported in the Doddagaddavalli Temple located in the Hasanpur district of Karnataka. This temple was built by the Hoysala dynasty in the 12th century. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) oversees it.
It is being told that the matter came to notice on Friday morning when the local people reached the temple and they found the idol of the goddess broken. It is feared that the miscreants may have come in search of the treasure hidden in the temple and taking advantage of the lack of security, broke the statue. Bengaluru Circle Superintendent Shivakant Bajpai told the media, "I have spoken to Hasan SP R Srinivasa Goda regarding the incident and we will definitely take action against whoever has done it."
ASI is also being blamed for the loss of Mahakali's statue. Dr Shalvapille Iyengar, an ancient history and archaeology expert, while speaking to the media, stated, "The idol of Bhadrakali or Dakshina Kali of the Doddagadavalli Chatushkuta temple has been demolished by miscreants. This is a big loss to our heritage. This temple was built by Vishnuvardhana of the Hoysala dynasty in 1113 AD. It is a unique temple of Mahalakshmi and a statue of Bhadrakali is placed in the south sanctum of this temple. ”
