NEW DELHI: From September 17 to October 1, which is National Voluntary Blood Donation Day, the Union Health Ministry will launch a massive blood donation campaign called "Raktdan Amrit Mahotsav."

According to an official source, the mega drive's goal is to donate 1.5 lakh units of blood on September 17, shattering the previous record for the most blood donated in a single day. The birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi falls on September 17.

The amount of blood that can now be stored in India is approximately 1.5 lakh units. Blood won't be drawn but participants will still receive certificates if the number of participants is too high. On the Aarogya Setu portal, under the "Raktdaan Amrit Mahotsav" initiative, registrations for voluntary blood donation have already started. This initiative urges individuals to donate blood and support the prime minister's vision for mankind.

According to an official, the campaign is being started to raise awareness about the importance of routine unpaid blood donations and to make sure that everyone has access to, and can afford, blood and its components. Right now, there is a massive imbalance between the supply and demand for blood. According to statistics from 2021, there were 1.46 units in demand for every 1.25 crore in supply. According to the source, blood banks or other organisations organising the drive will have access to the Aarogya Setu App users' data through the e-RaktKosh online platform.

1,78,443 TB patients and 1667 Nikshay Mitras (donors) have so far signed up for the Nikshay Mitra programme, which the President announced on September 9. He said that the Health Ministry was putting the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, which provides community support to TB patients, into action so that the community could effectively participate in the effort to eradicate TB.

Cooperative societies, corporations, elected officials, individuals, institutions, non-governmental organisations, political parties, and partners who can support by adopting the health facilities in state, district, block, and peripheral healthcare facilities are included in Nikshay Mitra (Donor) for this programme. The funding will last for a minimum of one year and a maximum of three years. The Nikshay Mitra will offer the program's patients dietary assistance, diagnostic support, and vocational assistance.
