Thiruvananthapuram: Despite the earlier deficiency in the southwest monsoon, Kerala is poised to experience a deluge in the coming days, marking the tail end of the monsoon season.
In its latest bulletin, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow alerts for nine districts, signaling the likelihood of isolated heavy rainfall. These districts include Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasargod.
Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasargod have all been placed under yellow alerts for Friday. On Saturday, heavy rainfall is expected in Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasargod. October 1st will see heavy rainfall in Ernakulam, Idukki, Kozhikode, and Kannur districts.
This deluge is being influenced by several weather systems developing in the vicinity of the state. Cyclonic circulations over Chhattisgarh, north interior Karnataka, the southwest Bay of Bengal, and a trough over north coastal Karnataka are expected to trigger heavy rainfall across Kerala. Additionally, a cyclonic circulation is projected to form over the east central Bay of Bengal around September 29.
The southwest monsoon season is set to conclude by September 30, and it has been marked by a significant deficiency of 38 percent in Kerala thus far. The state was initially expected to receive 1992.3 mm of rainfall between June 1 and September 27, but it has only received 1237 mm of rainfall during this period.
