NAGALAND: Severe rainfall in Chumoukedima district, Nagaland, has resulted in devastating flashfloods, causing significant damage to homes and a major section of National Highway-29. One person has been reported dead, and several others are missing following the torrential downpour.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night, leading to widespread damage in Pherima, where flashfloods swept through and destroyed roadside houses. A critical stretch of NH-29, which connects the state capital Kohima with the commercial hub Dimapur, has been completely washed away.
The Chumoukedima district administration is currently assessing the damage and has launched search operations to locate the missing individuals. Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has stated that the state government is collaborating with the central authorities for relief and rescue efforts. On social media, he expressed his deep concern over the extensive damage and assured that efforts are underway to restore normalcy.
Deputy Chief Minister T.R. Zeliang also expressed his sorrow over the calamity and urged prayers for the safety of those still missing. He confirmed that search and rescue operations are ongoing to address the situation.
In 2018, Nagaland experienced an unusually severe flooding event, a stark contrast to the state’s recent history of declining monsoon rainfall and desertification concerns. This sudden and intense flooding raised questions about the causes behind this drastic change.
Despite a long-term trend of reduced monsoon rainfall, Nagaland was hit by extraordinary downpours in 2018, resulting in severe floods. While the overall trend shows less rainfall, extreme weather events like these intense storms can still lead to significant flooding.
