Chennai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in some coastal areas of the state in the next 12 hours. On Wednesday and Thursday, one or two places may receive more than 20.4 cm of rain. According to a bulletin, the cyclonic circulation over Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Andaman Sea on Monday is expected to move west-northwestwards, deepen into a depression and hit the North Tennessee coast by Thursday.

Meanwhile, around 10 am, water discharge from Poondi reservoir, one of Chennai's major drinking water sources, was increased to 5,000 cusecs (cubic feet per second) as more flows were predicted by Tuesday evening. The water body now has 2,706 million cubic feet (mcft) of storage, while its capacity is 3,231 mcft. Spread over 34.58 sq km, the reservoir receives 3,226 cubic meters of input from the upstream catchment areas.

At present the Water Resources Department is releasing 4,040 cusecs of water. This is being scaled up further, as 1,000 cusecs of surplus water released from Ammapally dam in Andhra Pradesh is expected to reach the reservoir by Tuesday evening, and heavy rains are forecast for the rest of the week.
