CHENNAI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that the northeast monsoon will likely return to Tamil Nadu starting on Saturday, November 19.

The IMD issued a yellow alert in 7 districts on Saturday, and heavy rain is expected to start falling in the Chennai and delta regions on Saturday.

In three districts of Tamil Nadu, an orange alert has been issued for Sunday, and six districts have received a yellow alert.
On Sunday, isolated areas of the state's Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Villupuram districts are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rains. On November 19 and 20, heavy rain is predicted due to the new low-pressure region that has formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal, which is likely to move northwest and develop into a depression across the central portions of the South Bay of Bengal.

Rain is expected to continue for a few more days from Saturday, it said. Light to moderate showers and partly overcast skies are expected in several areas of Chennai. From Sunday on, Puducherry and Karaikkal are also anticipated to get heavy rains.

In the state's north, in Puducherry, and in some areas of south Tamil Nadu, heavy rain is predicted on Monday as well. The state has so far had 33 cm of rain, which is 14% more than usual.

Since winds are expected to blow off the coasts of Tamil Nadu and the Southwest Bay of Bengal from Saturday through Monday, the IMD has urged fishermen not to go out to sea.

Heavy rains could cause flooding because many areas of the state still need to finish installing stormwater drains.
