Due to a low pressure region that is expected to strengthen into a depression, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday predicted predicts severe to very heavy rainfall for Tamil Nadu and neighbouring areas.

On Monday evening, a low pressure area formed over southeast Bay of Bengal (BoB) and neighbouring areas of south Andaman Sea & Equatorial Indian Ocean (EIO) and moved west-northwestwards, eventually settling over central parts of south BoB and surrounding EIO about 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday.

"During the next 24 hours, it is likely to become a well-defined low-pressure system, which will then concentrate into a depression. During the following 24 hours, it is quite likely to move west-northwestwards towards the Sri Lankan coast, and then northwards towards the Tamil Nadu coast "According to the IMD bulletin.
