CHENNAI: On Thursday, heavy rains in Chennai resulted in three deaths from electrocution and the closure of four subway lines. Nearly 100 streets in Chennai's city centre were flooded, and Greater Chennai Corporation officials and personnel are working to evacuate the water.
Tamil Nadu Revenue and Disaster Management Minister K.K.S.S.R Ramachandran told the media that 106 streets in the city are flooded and that as the rain stops, the flooding will be cleaned. The Minister stated that the tanks and reservoirs in the Chennai area are being watched for inflow and will be opened if necessary for safety. Rainfall was particularly heavy in Nandanam, Vadapalani, and M.R.C. Nagar in Chennai, the minister said.
During the day on December 30, Nungambakkam had 12 cm of rain and Nandanam 8 cm, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). S. Balachandran, IMD's Deputy Director-General, said to the media, "Rain has fallen in the city due to the combination of easterly winds at lower levels and westerly winds at higher levels. Rain will continue to fall in the city until January 3rd."
