New Delhi:- With Red Bull and AlphaTauri creating a public frenzy about Nick de Vries following his retirement from the energy drink giant's F1 career, with buzz about his versatility, his former status as the world's best kart and a hefty trophy cabinet in a single-seater, the most important fact is that he was always the second contender. The seat belonged to Colton Herta.
But the then-22-year-old Herta was thwarted first by a cold bill on F1 superlicence eligibility and then by the FIA's lack of interest in changing the rules for Red Bull and the California native Herta. The de Vries pick that made this possible scored zero and had few notable highlights.
He was under pressure from day one, completely beaten by day 30, and "dead" shortly thereafter - as my colleague Ed Straw pointed out, his performance necessarily needed a change. It was no surprise that he was trapped, it was only a matter of timing.

This kind of prospect is now being voiced (playfully) by people like Ferrari F1 boss Fred Vasseur, especially those investing in Herta as a F1 candidate and potential F1 star. It doesn't seem like an uncommon reaction. Attraction of Andretti and Cadillac entries) Importance of the US Drivers Representative in the top end of the grid.
Indeed, F1 trains can hardly be expected to make more than one stop at stations other than elite prospective athletes, so Herta may never again be as high on F1 teams' shopping lists as it was last year. Even if you allow him to remain at the front of IndyCar racing, or at the front of IndyCar racing.
But it's also likely that Herta's superlicensing dilemma simply prevented him from appearing in the 2023 version of the De Vries Saga.
Opposite beliefs require one or both of the two assumptions. So Herta would have been absolutely better than De Vries, adapting faster and performing better, and/or Herta would have given a longer lead and more of his status afterward would have remained. 10 races were protected even if Red Bull suddenly became interested in Daniel Ricciardo's rating.

Herta making an immediate and significant impact on De Vries in F1 seems the far less likely of the two scenarios above. The American's F1 affair stems from the fact that he has established himself as one of the frontrunners for the IndyCar World Championship from a young age and has previously shown some fitness on the European leaderboards.
He was a very reliable rival to Carlin's team-mate Lando Norris in British Formula 4 and outperformed the eventual champion in the second half of what was his only season in the category. He then made a good impression at the Euroformula Open as part of Campos' expansion into the quirky F3 series. But to think that this is a better youth player than De Vries would be a big leap. Despite the strange twists and turns of his youth career, De Vries has ensured a trophy cabinet in various categories. And as much as Herta did in IndyCar, De Vries had great success on the Formula E grid, including titles. – not to be taken lightly.

Add to that the regular presence of De Vries in the paddock and the very long F1 mileage of the 2022 season, and there seems to be some pretty strong evidence that Herta would have started a step or a half behind.
He tested himself at McLaren and is believed to have done pretty well, but unlike, say, fellow IndyCar rider Alex Palou, that was it.
It could be a matter of timing, it could be that Herta is firmly committed to Andretti while McLaren is eyeing a Spaniard for the IndyCar team, but it's also possible, or at least rumored, that Palou, who has been in full swing in IndyCar and has played longer in Europe than Herta, simply made a bigger impression as a potential F1 contender.
