The High Court has ordered the Uttarakhand government to conduct road safety audit of all the roads in the state within one month and then to improve on the basis of the audit. Also, a single bench of Justice Rajiv Sharma has made it clear that helmets are also compulsory for those who sit behind two-wheelers.

This rule will also apply to the children above five years of age. Along with this, the court has directed that the Transport Department provide sufficient buses on other routes during Chardham yatra. 

They said that any personal vehicle should be removed from the Guard, Bulb Bar etc. in a week. The court has banned hooters, sirens etc. on private vehicles too. Other traffic offences such as drunk driving, driving without a licence will also be taken care of on a serious note.

Mr Srinivas, Additional Transport Commissioner said, “Focus will be more on the enforcement of the rule to reduce accidents than generating revenue from the move. Plans are afoot to impart training to auto drivers and others to create awareness on traffic norms.” 

The most number of accidents take place in Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Haryana, Kerala, Rajasthan and Maharashtra. About 86 per cent of the accidents are reported in these states.
